Laboratory Work

Occupational Safety and Health Act – Title 29 CFR - Subpart Z – 1910.1450 Occupational Exposure to Hazardous Chemicals in Laboratories, (29 CFR 1910.1450).

Persons working in laboratories may be exposed to a number of hazards due to the variety of chemicals, radioactive, biological materials present, and types of equipment used. Many of these chemicals are physically harmful (acids, bases, flammable, explosive, etc.), or toxic (poisons, carcinogens, sensitizers, etc.). Equipment present in the lab can also present hazards due to high voltage, radiation, laser light, x-rays, and biological concerns. The FIU Lab Safety Team is responsible for monitoring and safe work procedures and conduct inspections as part of their role in supporting laboratory safety.
