Compressed Gases
There are a number of chemicals which are used and stored throughout the university in the form of compressed gasses and liquids. These can be recognized by their metal storage containers which normally have a valve through which the material is delivered directly to a piece of equipment through hose lines. While the contents of these cylinders can present the same hazards as regular chemicals (toxicity, flammability, asphyxiates, and carcinogens) they also present an additional hazard because they are under pressures which can be over 1,000 pounds per square inch. These pressures can cause these containers to become airborne if accidental release of the gas was to occur because of improper storage, handling or use. Additional safety requirements which go into further detail about safe use and storage of compressed gases can be found in the Occupational Safety and Health Act – Title 29 CFR 1910 - Subpart H – Hazardous Materials – 1910.101 through 111 (29 CFR 1910.101 – 1910.111) and Subpart M – Compressed Gas and compressed Gas Equipment (29 CFR 1910 Subpart M).
