Registered/Suspected Carcinogens

Students and employees working in laboratories, shops, studios, and maintenance may use known and suspected carcinogens as part of their daily work routine. Supervisors are required to inform them of these materials and provide the training, work procedures, engineering controls and personnel protective equipment necessary to minimize exposures to acceptable levels. These carcinogenic materials include chemicals such as chloroform, formaldehyde, benzene, various cleaning solvents, and gasoline. If you are concerned about materials you use and their potential health effects please discuss this with your supervisor or the Industrial Hygienist at the Risk Management and Environmental Health & Safety Department. Additional safety requirements which go into further detail about requirements for working with known and suspected carcinogens can be found in the Occupational Safety and Health Act – Title 29 CFR 1910 - Subpart S – Electrical (29 CFR 1910 Subpart S), and Subpart Z – 1910.1000 Toxic and Hazardous Substances (29 CFR 1910.100), and 1910.1450 Occupational Exposure to Hazardous Chemicals in Laboratories, (29 CFR 1910.1450).
