Bio-hazardous/Infectious Materials
All employees are required to complete mandatory training within 10 days of assignment to positions in which they are exposed or likely to exposed to bloodborne pathogens. Note that employees must also be provided with the opportunity to receive the Hepatitis Vaccine Series or to complete a Declination Statement rejecting the offer to receive the vaccine. The hiring department is responsible to pay for the cost of the vaccine and to afford the employee work-time for medical appointments to receive the vaccine
Exposure to bloodborne pathogens (Human Immunodeficiency Virus, Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C) may cause disease in humans. Title 29 CFR 1910.1030 mandates that the University Exposure Control Plan shall be made accessible to employees in accordance to the Bloodborne Pathogen (BBP) Standard. This plan is available at the Risk Management & Environmental Health & Safety web site. Employees are required to complete BBP training (www.fiu.edu/~ehs) within the first 10 days of their start date and annually thereafter. Supervisors must assure they have identified all employees in their area of responsibility who have or may have potential exposure to bloodborne pathogens and assure that these employees are offered the Hepatitis B vaccination or complete the vaccination declination form.
