Utilities & High Voltage Equipment
Only employees specially trained (electricians, maintenance, and engineers) are authorized to work on utilities and high voltage equipment that present a high-energy hazard (electrical boxes, generators, capacitors, compressors, etc). These types of equipment have the potential to release energy at levels that can result in serious bodily injury or death. Persons doing installation, maintenance, or removal on this type of equipment must be trained and follow strict lockout - tagout procedures before doing any work on the systems. Additional safety requirements for working on electrical and potentially energized equipment can be found in the Occupational Safety and Health Act – Title 29 CFR 1910 - Subpart S – Electrical (29 CFR 1910 Subpart S), and Subpart J – 1910.147 The Control of Hazardous Energy (lockout – tagout) (29 CFR 1910.147).
